Hotkey voice dictation into any desktop app. Run Whisper fully offline, bring your own keys, or use Kalam Cloud — no account, no data harvesting.

Kalam is Balacode's voice dictation product: hold a hotkey, speak, and text lands in the focused app. It is built for people who do not want a subscription wall or an audio-harvesting cloud between them and their keyboard.

Challenge

Desktop dictation tools are usually locked to one OS, require an account, or send every utterance to a vendor. Teams that need Whisper offline, bring-your-own keys, and a Cloud option in the same app had to stitch together separate stacks.

Solution

We built a native Tauri + Rust app that runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux:

  • Local Whisper: Run speech-to-text on-device with no account and no data harvesting.
  • Bring your own keys: Point Kalam at the STT/LLM providers you already pay for.
  • Kalam Cloud: Optional cloud path for people who want managed models without running them locally.
  • OS-native insert: Hotkey capture and insert into the focused desktop app, including Linux panel applets where a floating overlay does not fit the desktop.

Results

Kalam ships as a first-party Balacode product at kalamvoice.com — speak, it types, everywhere — without inventing a client case study around it.
